AVC is the largest mixed animal practice in Texas and with 12 full time veterinarians and 5 interns, we have a very active and very busy case load where an intern will see just about every clinical situation imaginable. The 5 interns rotate between large animal and small animal shifts every 2 weeks that include equine, food animal, small animal internal medicine, small animal surgery and anesthesia, and community practice. Case rounds, led by interns and attended by externs and clinicians, are held daily where we have in depth study and group discussions on selected clinical cases. With an active externship program averaging 50 – 60 externs a year and representing every veterinary school in the U.S, as well as several Canadian, European, and Australian schools, we have created an atmosphere of learning, teaching, and the exchange of ideas.
Weekly clinic wide in-service days are held each Thursday and often include clinical service veterinary presentations. With 5 interns dividing emergency duties, more personal time and time off is available than in most internships. Housing is provided at the facility to simplify life and reduce expenses.
The attached Equine hospital has four stocks, 2 mare/foal stocks, a breeding lab and 16 stalls. A separate surgery room with a hydraulic lift table is used for surgeries. Our patients include Quarter Horses, Tennessee Walkers, Arabians and Thoroughbreds, and a few Warm Bloods. We have close relationships with several equine specialists and refer surgical colic cases.
Our food animal practice is mostly cow/calf operations, show cows, rodeo bulls, small ruminants and occasionally some show pigs. Our doctors have a strong interest in medicine and lameness, and our hydraulic chute is very busy and one of the best pieces of equipment in the clinic.
The support staff is the best and consists of 8 experienced small animal techs averaging 12+ years employment here, 4 large animal techs. 8 secretary/receptionists, and 6 tech assistants. This allows the interns to concentrate on learning and applying their veterinary knowledge. We definitely offer a hands-on learning experience stressing quality and compassionate vet medicine.
